The Outsiders is based on the coming-of-age novel by S. E. Hinton, first published in 1967 by Viking Press. The story follows two rival groups, the Greasers and the Socs, who are divided by their socioeconomic status. The production is told from the point of view of the protagonist, Ponyboy Curtis, as he and his "tuff" group of friends deal with their situations and relationships when life isn't fair.
